Let's Talk About Food

"What's the food like?!?" is the first question I've been getting asked by just about everyone. So, here's a whole post all about food!

This one is for the Mazzas...

When we first got here, we had some... not so great wonton soup. As we walked through the streets we couldn't smell anything but stinky tofu. So, needless to say, we stayed clear of actual Taiwanese food for a little while.

Luckily (or not, depending on your view), there is plenty of western food in Taipei. TGIFridays, Chili's, pizza, burgers, McDonalds...

But that's the boring, unadventurous food no one cares about, so let's get to the good stuff!

What I'll call our first real, delicious, and amazing Taiwanese meal was at this great local restaurant. It was crowded (always a good sign) and had a fish tank in the front so we knew it was really fresh food!

Sashimi

Bamboo

Sweet and Sour fish

Pineapple Shrimp

Kung Pao Chicken

Some veg

There's a squid dish in the black pot

Another night we got an amazing dessert. Frozen milk ice with strawberry, kiwi, and mango.

There are tons of shopping malls everywhere. Each one has a complete food court with actually nice food. Here's what I got one day for lunch:

Shrimp, tofu, chicken, bean sprouts and greens, and an egg all served on a sizzling hot pan

Served with rice, soup, and a glass of water

We couldn't find anything good to eat near the hostel for the longest time.  Tonight, we FINALLY found one! It was a great place, with lots of banter. The waitress opened the English menu for us and pointed to what we should order. She even made us order our veggies! The food was delicious and we'll definitely be going back there.
anchovies with chili, cucumbers,

Spinach

Chicken cashew

Shrimp dumplings, noodles, Taiwanese beer, and everything else

Taiwanese spring onion pancake

  1. Most of the food does look awesome! Maybe not the fish that looks like it's still screaming, though... Very proud of you, Sarah --- not bad for someone who would only eat calzones!
    Love ya!
